Kilmarnock is a bustling and vibrant historic town, with restaurants, wonderful stores, antique shops, and a largish shopping mall on its outskirts. First settled in the mid 1600s, Kilmarnock was originally known as “The Crossroads”, probably referring to the location of an important intersection of Indian paths. In the early 1700s William Steptoe began to operate a storehouse and an ordinary at this location. Soon the crossroads came to be known as “Steptoe’s Ordinary.” In 1764 an agent for a Scottish firm, is believed to have given the name “Kilmarnock” to the crossroads’ location in remembrance to a town in Scotland. The earliest known reference of “Kilmarnock, Virginia,” can be found in a deed recorded in 1778. It was incorporated as the “Town of Kilmarnock” by an act of the General Assembly in 1930.
Kilmarnock is located in the Northern Neck region of Virginia.
